Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors

Primary Brain and Spinal Cord cancers are cancers that originate in the Central Nervous System (CNS) -  inside the skull or in the spinal column. Diseases such as tuberous sclerosis can give rise to these sorts of cancers.  Surprisingly most CNS cancers arise from the cells that support the neurons (brain cells).  These cancers usually grow slowly.

Diagnosis/Symptoms:  There are numerous possible symptoms of brain cancer such as headaches, nausea, vision or hearing problems, behavioral and cognitive problems, motor problems, and balance problems. Spinal cord tumors often have pain and/or motor problems.

Treatment:  Like most other cancers the treatment for Brain and Spinal Cord tumors can be Radiation, chemotherapy or surgery or a possible combination.  There are also some other treatments such as gene therapy - that make tumor cells more sensitive to therapy.
