Carcinoid tumors are rare slow growing tumors that occur
in the gastrointestinal tract. They are usually easily
cured especially if caught early enough when the disease is
still in the digestive tract. They usually appear in the
gastrointestinal tract or in some rare cases can occur outside -
such as in the lung.
Symptoms - There may be pain in the
abdominal area associated with blockage. Other symptoms
observed may be diarrhea, wheezing (when occurring in the lungs
- referred to as bronchoconstriction) as well as flushing of the
skin around the neck and face area.
Diagnosis - A doctor may ask for blood
and urine tests to detect the presence of cancer. Imaging
techniques can be used to further detect the cancer.
Treatment - As with most other cancers -
depending on the stage of the disease, location and other
factors, your doctor may prescribe: radiation therapy, surgery,
chemotherapy or biological therapy (using the body's own immune
system).
