Eye Cancer - is occurs in rare
conditions. The two types of cancers
associated with the eye are known as
melanoma (a form of skin cancer) and
lymphoma (cancer that starts in
lymph nodes). Children can get a
form of eye cancer known as
retinoblastoma - a condition that is
usually inherited (faulty gene).
Although rare retinoblastoma can
also occur in adults.
Symptoms - Early stages of eye
cancer can begin with blurred vision
and tenderness. Complete loss of
site can occur in advance stages.
Diagnosis - An ophthalmologist can
readily make the diagnosis by
looking directly into the eye.
Treatment - Surgery tends to be the
best method of removing the tumor.
Depending on the stage of the cancer
development the eye can sometimes be
saved. Advanced cases are usually
best treated with complete removal
of the eye. In cases where the tumor
has spread to other parts of the
body - radiation and chemotherapy
are used. Other treatments for eye
cancer include laser, extreme cold
(cryogenics) and heat - all used to
destroy the cancerous tissue.
